My Global Learning Journey
SOP 4731- Global Psychology
This course allowed me to examine and understand human behavior within its natural context, especially in low income countries, and the kind of Psychological help offered to members of the society. I also learned to design and contextualize ethical and socially responsible actions to support individual and social well-being.
I now understand counselors have a great challenge understanding not only the problem that the person is facing but also their cultural differences.
IDH 4905- Honors Independent Study
Engaging in creating my own academic scholarship is relatively connected not only to my global journey but also to the three principals of Global Learning such as:
Global perspective: Through the data collection, the students who take part in the study are more aware of their own learning strategies, and will be able to reflect on that. They will also be conscious of how others learn, which will increases their global perspective by thinking for example, “How does a student from Ukraine will answer those questions in the survey?”. For myself, as a student researcher, I learn how to do research, collect data, and have a broader perspective on other people’s learning strategies as well. FIU Faculty and Staff will learn about how the diverse population of FIU learns, which will help them meet diverse students’ needs. It is important since we have students coming from different backgrounds, each of them will have a unique perception on learning.

Global awareness: This research is helping me and others to understand the connections between people’s experiences and their learning, and one another. We can make a comparison between students from the United States and students from China, which experience very restrictive regulations during this period, and India, which has one of the highest records of COVID-19 cases in 2020. My Honors Thesis will also have references from international sources as well.

Global engagement: The work will certainly not stop at publishing. I will engage with FIU Student Success Center, the Student Government Association, and the Disabilities Resources Center to engage on how modules can be more adaptable to students’ learning strategies and cognitive flexibility. This will be a research-learning experience that represents different cultures of one of the most diverse campuses in the United States.
CLP4314- Psychology of Health and Illness
I took this class during my time in India as a Research Fellow. Beside the whole trip, I learned so much about how this society handle their health care system compared to the other countries I had visited or lived in.
One thing that blew off my mind was my visit to JSS Ayurveda Medical College. The natural system of medicine and healing is very common in Haiti and is done in informal context with the knowledge transmitted from generation to generation. However in India, it is an institution with doctors who are specialized in this kind of medicine. I learned that a lot of those people don't go towards the western medicine without consulting the ancient Indian medical system first.
I saw the different kind of plants and machines that doctors use to perform their work. It was really powerful to see how they embrace their cultures and how the Ayuverda medical system is still alive after 5000 years of introduction.
Reflection
Pursuing my global learning journey has increase my global awareness. It opened my eyes to different issues and inequalities around the world which gives me a better understanding of my global engagement. As I am planning to pursue a career in Education, my journey as a global learner reinforced my passion and motivation to help underserved and underrepresented group. Now I have this sense of responsibility to become a lifelong leader who can motivate and encourage others to pursue their dreams, even the "crazy" ones. Although there has been extreme highs and extreme lows throughout my journey at FIU, I believe I have impacted the world and have further developed myself as a person.
I plan to continue to keep myself up to date on global issues that other countries are facing and going through. Pursuing my Global Learning Medallion is a great achievement for me. All the courses I have taken have prepared me for the real world and what it is to come for the future. I now have a different perspective of the world around me. Thanks to my professors and mentors, I have been equipped with the tools to become a global citizen and an active member of my community.
I would like to specially thank my professors and the FIU Global Learning Office team for their unconditional support, and for making my time at FIU so meaningful.
